Standing Desk Conversion

Amy and I work from home somewhat regularly, and in 2016 we turned the spare bedroom into a home office. Besides a filing cabinet and some bookshelves, the main priority was a desk. We decided on this 8ft long, 30in deep, 1.75in thick maple packing table from Uline. The frame and legs were repurposed from a much lighter Ikea Galant L-shaped desk and held up fine over the years.

TODO: Find a picture that isn’t so messy! 😛

Fast-forward to 2026, and we wanted to make a change. Amy uses the office much more than I do, and would like to be able to stand or even move while at the desk. We researched standing desk frames that could fit an 8-foot-long table weighing around 110lbs, but they were expensive and more for industrial applications. The solution was to cut the desk in half.

We found the FLEXISPOT E6 Dual Motor Standing Desk Frame for a reasonable price, and it supports 220lbs of desk and contents, raises from 24″ to 49″, and supports a minimum 4-foot desk.

We got all of the monitors and stuff off the desk, unbolted and elevated off of the ikea metal frame…

We cut it with my circular saw using a brand new Diablo 40-tooth finish blade. The cut went perfectly, with only one tiny chip that was glued back in place. Now the metal frame was shortened for the left desk, and the standing desk frame was attached to the right desk.

Now that the desk moves up and down, it shouldn’t have many cables hanging down to get caught or look messy. Amy also wanted a KVM (keyboard, video, and mouse switch) that would allow her to switch between her work and personal computers. We used this GREATHTEK dual monitor KVM switch , re-installed Amy’s preferred pull-out keyboard tray, and managed the mess of wires as best as possible.

The cables coming down on the “umbilical” consisted of power, network, a USB cable and 2x DisplayPort cables. To prevent strain from breaking any of them, I used a chain to distribute the weight and tried my best to contain the clutter.

Here is the final result! With the addition of a Merach UltraWalk walking pad, the desk is flexible in how you want to work. I also painted the silver ikea desk legs a flat black to match.

Here’s to many more years of the office being flexible and functional!
